The Tri-Workshop
June 1, 2018 @ 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM
The Tri-Workshop will host three sessions covering USA undergrad application process, introduction to coding and extracurricular activities interspersed with stand-up comedy. The sessions will be instructed by Fahim Khan, Physics and Astronomy major at Bates College, and Azman Anju Khan Chowdhury, Founder and CEO of Durnibar Foundation. The following summarizes the main themes and takeaways from each session.
US undergrad application:
• Know the ins and outs of the application process, what the admissions committee is looking for and how to make your application unique. See sample essays, additional info, and college-specific questions.
• Realize that you have to apply to an array of colleges, both Ivy League, and liberal arts. Know what Ivy leagues are looking for in your admission file and why some small liberal arts colleges are easier to get admitted to and no less than Ivy Leagues in terms of academic opportunities, financial aid, and career development.
• Realize the potential you have, learn how to be proactive and do own research.
• Know the flaw in our education system that does not prepare us for studying abroad. Learn to cultivate and showcase the skills that our academic system undermines but western education treasures.

Intro to coding:
• Coding is a mindset, know how to think computationally.
• Having coding skills is a must whether you are an econ, politics or philosophy major. We will give you good reasons why such is the case.
• Understand the importance of independent learning, don’t let anyone fool you by saying you need to take college-level classes to learn coding.
• Get a head start and start cultivating computational skills before you go to college.
• Learn the problem-solving approach, how to use flowcharts and develop algorithms through step-by-step demos.
• Get started on using python, the easiest, most recent and widely used language.
• Get links to free online sources: learn different languages like Python, PHP, CSS and practice writing algorithms by solving problems.

Extracurricular activities:
• Realize that grades are not everything. Colleges and employers value social and interpersonal skills way more than a piece of paper that lists your marks.
• Learn how to cultivate and enhance leadership, communication, organization and community-driven skills through volunteer activities.
• Make a social impact as well as impress the admissions committee by participating in charity movements.
